A question for the Internets

Great Internets! I supplicate myself in your general direction!

Why, oh wise one, do people put coins on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s headstone?

Offerings to the spirit of a great author. Best I can come up with. Also, Walking Dead gets really really awesome after Volume 3. I think Volume 5 is the Governor storyline, which is so mind-bendingly awesome that I can’t go a day without mentioning it, apparently.

They’re hoping an undead pregnant roofer will pop out.

I think it’s so he can buy the first round in the Great Beyond. And coins are more practical since they won’t blow away like paper money.

There is an anonymous person that always leaves a bottle of Bourbon on his grave every anniversary of his death—Much like the famed Poe Cognac guy.

Wow–I didn’t know they did, but now I know where to go when I need some cash to buy booze with. Gotta run.

I couldn’t find any reference to the coins, but according to washwriter.org, people do often leave behind packs of cigarettes and martini glasses “similar to those that regularly accompanied Fitzgerald throughout his life”. There’s also no reference to an annual visitor, like the Poe Toaster.

Yours is the only photo I’ve seen with ANYTHING on the stone.

there are many old traditions about leaving coins on headstones. the coins are not unique to f. scott fitzgerald’s gravesite. the coins are believed to aid the deceased in paying their passage to heaven. alternately, the coins are said to pay any debts that may have been owed to the deceased before death, that way the ghost of the person who died won’t haunt whoever it was that owed the money. lastly, it’s similar to making a wish at a wishing well. you leave a coin and make a wish that the deceased may be able to grant from beyond.

Yeah, dana’s right. Didn’t you see Boondock Saints? They’re to pay Charon. ;)

If they leave lenses, then you know you’re actually at F-Stop Fitzgerald’s grave.

    Boo. Hiss. I’m fired.
