Courtesy of Alex, I now have pictures of my server, but to be clear, Alex is not the person responsible for maintaining this facility.
You’ll have to look at them at full-size to see the magnitude of crappiness that is server that hosts my blog. Some things to notice:
my server has holes drilled in the front of it. For wind reduction or something.
my server is in a dingy basement laundry room
my server room has a kegerator
Those of you who read my blog and are nerds, have a field day with these two pictures.

To be clear, at the base of the front bezel on the POS Gateway case reads a single word: “Performance.”
That’s what I strive for, really.
Ohhhh, ACW. I have so many questions.
WHAT THE FUCK? Why are there servers next to a WINDOW?!
(Sorry to whoever arranged this setup, but that is a BAD BUSINESS PLAN.)
(Are you curious how I really feel about this?)
Also, what’s regulating the temperature and humidity in that basement?
Is this basement in MD? Or a dry climate?
Why do I care? Cuz it’s what I do.
I’ll have to post pictures of my server someday. It can never match up to yours, because I don’t have a cool rack or a kegerator.
Also, are those SparcStations on the top shelf? Three in a stack? That’s just awesome.
You drilled a glory hole in your server? That’s worse than dead people.
Is that an actual desktop acting as a server? Kudos to your colo for the kegerator, but bullocks to you for using a workstation as a server. As mokie said, POS Gateway. I used to call them Ghettoways. ;-)
I also like the additional cooling fans. Nice touch.
are those paris hilton’s servers sitting next to yours?
It’s actually more specifically MY server rather than HIS server. HE just happens to have some files on it.
And yes, it is an old scavenged desktop. It’s running a P3 800mhz with three 6-year-old SCSI RAID drives in RAID-5 sandwiched in vertically where two hard drives are supposed to go horizontally. The speed holes in the front are actually because I managed to cram an 80mm fan into the front bezel and it’s forcing air across the hard drives, two of which are actually touching. This results in a whopping 15gb of RAIDed space.
If it makes you feel any better, we’re upgrading, and Newegg Santa should be arriving today.
My server is made by Fisher Price. I just upgraded from Playskool.
does the server dispense soft server ice cream?
could i get a cone with the vanilla and chocolate swirled together?
I wish your server should be named Alex.
I mean that I think your server should be named Alex and/or I wish it already was named Alex.
Damn it my brain is so slow.
You should put a liquid cooling system in the new server, but instead of water put sake in it instead. Then you’d have a kegerator AND warm sake on tap! Won’t do much for anyone’s admin skills, but it would make a server-infested cinder block basement that much more tolerable.
Who the hell cares? You’ve got a kegerator. :)
Rest assured, dear readers. Indulge in the liquid goodness from the kegerator and all the other problems (windows, cooling, dirty laundry) will magically disappear.
As for desktops, hell no. They’s custom-build, so long as no one pitches in a few grand for a nice rack-mount ditty.
(proud owner of the left-most system, representin’…)
I’m not nerdy enough to know what the hell is going on with your server, but I am OCD and I commend the cleanliness of that basement. VERY impressive.
That’s an awful lot of equipment for one crappy blog.
Where are the bananas?
Dammit.
I must confess. The basement is mine. The two faster/awesomer servers are mine. The kegerator is mine, although I plan to share (the contents anyway).
The servers will soon be moved away from the window. I had to do some quick work to keep the downtime to a minimum while we moved to a new house, so I didn’t have a lot of choices of where to place the servers.
I keep trying to find a real rack to force mokie to upgrade his “server”. Until then I’m stuck with a rack I bought from SAM’S CLUB for $50. If you see a “real” server rack anywhere drop ACW an e-mail and well come pick it up within the vicinity of Baltimore.
I’ll have you know that our servers stay up for a whole 10 minutes during a power outage.
The SUN servers are:
(2) Sun Sparc Station 10
(1) Sun Sparc Station 5
they run DNS and DHCP
it’s like bad server porn…
Desk Job:
The minute you upgrade to equipment that isn’t just tossed on a cheap Sam’s Club shelf and made from the crap you had lying around, everything will stop working.
My experience. Also why my server is a crappy $200 PowerSpec mid-tower sitting in a cluttered office. I think I can handle about 3 users at one time!. I understand if you want to cower in fear. My server is awesome.
