This is why we need mandatory retests for driver’s licenses every 5 years

Beltway Reopened In Baltimore County After Accident
Tuesday, February 27, 2007
WBAL Radio

The State Highway Administration says both loops of the Baltimore beltway are now reopened following an accident this morning.

Two tractor trailers and a car collided in the fast lane of the outer loop of the beltway at Reisterstown Road.

The accident happened around 10 a.m. and created a ball of flames.

Firefighters worked for several hours to put out the flames.

State Police tell WBAL Radio that one of the big rigs was carrying agricultural lime and the other one was hauling municipal waste.

Sgt. Russ Newell says the drivers of the tractor trailers were taken to Sinai Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Newell says the 82-year-old driver of the car and an 81-year-old passenger were not injured.

Newell says the accident occurred when the driver of the car stopped in the second fast lane between Park Heights Avenue and Reisterstown Road. Police say as that driver tried to get into the next lane to get off the beltway the driver of the truck carrying lime wasn’t able to avoid hitting the vehicle. Police say the two vehicles then skidded over towards the median and were struck by the third truck.

I’m glad no one was killed, but this could have been avoided (possibly) if the driver of the car was never allowed on the road. Who STOPS on the beltway (of all places in Maryland, the beltway is the worst (excepting 495)) and then tries to turn through traffic? Ugh! This infuriates me! Just drive to the next goddamned exit, or call a fucking cab if you don’t know where you’re going. Stopping on the beltway is retarded.

People should be forced to re-apply and re-test for their licenses because we see this stupid bullshit every day. Some old people will fail, but so will some young people. And honestly, we’d be safer without them on the road.

So, while I agree with you in principle, that old people should be bricked up inside their houses after a certain point, how do you propose to test for this particular stupidity?

Q: Do you ever foresee yourself coming to a dead stop in the fast lane of the Beltway?
    A: Of course not… oops, I think I just pooped myself a little…

I saw the aftermath of that wreck tonight. It is amazing that nobody was killed.

    more usb dongles please.

  4. 4 Mighty Dyckerson

Geez, where is the beltway sniper when you NEED him???

  5. 5 Liz

It’s amazing no one was hurt…got stuck in all that traffic today. Idiots.

I knew what your were going to post about when I saw your headline! That was stupid to stop the car in the middle lane of the beltway for any reason. I would just go to the next exit and make my way back to where I wanted to go.

My wife called me to make sure I was not in the traffic or in that accident. She knew I was on the beltway about that time, and I was. I was on the inner loop about a mile from the accident. I saw the emergency vehicles responding and the police. Thank goodness no one was hurt!

Oh, I’ve been in the car with my very old and partially blind grandfather….I support this 100%.

    Fucking MORONS.

There were people showing up late to my HEL class because of the accident. Ironicly, one student quipped “carbeque” about the incident, and I was able to use that for an example of a new word created out of two others. Hah.

Many young people will. Most of them are driving while TXT messaging. Retards.

This is 100% true. Mandatory testing! And once a year once you’re past 70. Things like reaction time and vision can go downhill really fast at that point.

jwer- Not exactly, though I’m sure that would catch a few. I think the entire testing process needs to be scrapped and replaced with a one-hour road test.

tfg- Yeah, I saw pictures on the news and it looked horrible.

Kendra- Oh, I’ll give you a dongle alright…

MD- See, the snipers were shooting at people, not cars, so they wouldn’t have helped.

Liz- Of course it fucked up the entire circumference of the beltway. How could it not?

DD- I’m glad you were safe. Everyone would have been safe if not for the driver’s idiocy.

Snay- I thought of you as soon as I heard about this.

Michael- Text messaging with poor grammar, no less.

Watergirl- Yes, exactly! Also, I think testing once a year from age 16 to 21 would be a good idea.

I dunno, I think those people that would get caught might not be able to make it to the DMV without a fatality…

What I think we should do is start putting a gem in every baby’s hand, one that starts out white, then as they get older, turns yellow, then green, then red, then blinking red, then they get their license taken away.

Also, we should all live in a mall in Dallas/Ft Worth.

    Agreed with jwer.

I’ve got a bum eye. I don’t work to hide this fact, but I don’t advertise it either. One of my eyes is just straight legally blind, 20/200 vision, useless. (I’m holding out for the cybernetic eye.) More than anything, I’m a careful driver. I know my limits, know how to drive in varying weather types, and avoid stupidity. And I wish they’d test me every four years or so, for two reasons:

    - proves unequivocally that I can drive at least as well as everyone else with a license
    - lets me know if I ever stop being able to drive well. I will gladly take a bus or a cab or have a friend drive it if means not killing anyone.

Not a day goes by that I don’t wish some aged and decrepit douchebag off the roads. Of course, out here, every damned person has this super sense of entitlement, which means that they think they were born with the right to cut you off, park in the middle of the street, and ride up your ass because you didn’t let them turn in front of you. I thought SC had bad drivers, but at least they aren’t all ass holes.

I can totally relate to this one! Not only because I’m in the process of trying to get our 92-year-old uncle’s license pulled, but having lived in the DC area, I can imagine what a nightmare that was on the Beltway!

Texas is currently in the process of trying to pass a law making it mandatory at age 90 to take a driving test … personally, I think the age should be much lower.

(Bloghopped over from Miss Cellania’s where she has your idiot customer at Target linked. That was too funny! All I can say is … future Darwin Award contestant! Hopefully.)
