A new friend

This morning as I was getting ready, I looked out my window to the fire escape* because I thought I had seen something move out there.

See, I’ve been trained by my surroundings. When Kmart and I had a mouse, my peripheral vision was strengthened, and expanded, because of how frequently the mouse would make a mad dash from the kitchen to the living room, or vice versa. Add to that the fact that ACWF’s family has eight cats** that you have to keep an eye on so they don’t end up underfoot. I’m always seeing things moving, even if it’s just a dust bunny, or a small leaf.

So when I saw something move outside today, first I thought it was a mouse. Then I worried it was a rat. I was happy to find out, upon closer inspection, that I had seen the lazy flicking of a tail as a kitty cat was bathing itself in the morning sun.

I whistled to get it’s attention, and it’s little head popped up and looked at me through the window. I moved to open the window, and the cat backed off. When I finally managed to open the window to talk, the cat took off down the fire escape.

It looks like the same cat I had seen a while ago, but now he has a collar on, along with a flea collar. So I guess it must still be a stray at heart, but at least people have taken it upon themselves to look after it to some degree. I was wondering if I should leave the cat some tuna, but I decided against it. I don’t want to see a rat sunbathing on my fire escape in the morning.

*The fire escape in my building is made of wood. Safe, flame-resistant, wood. I’ll be taking the stairs if the building ever catches on fire.
