Douchebags, part 2

Here’s the first part of the story.

After the cop gave me the info I went inside to cool down. The rest of the evening was fairly uneventful. The next morning I got a call from my insurance company. They told me that they were going to do a tag search on the guy’s plates so they could determine his insurer. They said it would take a few days.

A few days later I got a call from my insurance company. They had found the guy, and they started a claim for me with his insurer. They told me to call his insurer and follow-up on the claim if they didn’t call me by the Monday of the next week.

Don’t you just know it, they called me Monday. They took all my info, and asked if I could take my car to a mechanic in the area. I said sure, and the two mechanics’ locations they offered weren’t very convenient, so they offered to have an inspector come to my place of work, and inspect the car there.

I said that was fine, and the guy inspected my car and told me I should get a check from the insurance company in a few days. I was skeptical, but Friday night, when I got home from the dinner boat cruise, there was an envelope from the insurance company waiting for me outside the apartment. I opened it, and inside was a check for $253 dollars. The approximate cost to replace my bumper.

I was thinking about photocopying the check and leaving it on the douchebag’s windshield with a note that said, “If you had simply apologized, this wouldn’t have happened.” But I decided against it, and now I’ll probably use the money to a) donate to the Bookthing, b) doublecheck my car’s integrity with my regular mechanic, and make any fixes to it with the money, c) put any remaining money into savings.

I feel vindicated. Like the system actually works.

Bookthing

You can donate to the Bookthing here, now.

There’s a little place in Baltimore called the Bookthing. They take your old books and give them away to other people. It’s not any more complicated than that. I go in and drop off my old English Literature from 1800-1950 textbook, they hang on to it until someone else comes in and takes it home. It’s all free. Seriously. Here’s the site. Just click on the FAQ for a little more info.

There is a problem though, they ran out of space at the old place, and now that they’ve found a new space, they have to pay the closing costs and everything else, quick.

Here’s the story:

I have good news and bad news for everybody. We have signed a contract on a new location that is seven times the size of our current location, but we need to raise $40,000 for a down payment and closing costs in less than 30 days. This is the most pivotal time in the history of The Book Thing.

To bring everyone up to speed: the building that houses our current location was sold in September 2004. The new owner is looking to renovate our space into an office or apartment. Our rent was $235 and he has now raised it to $525. The growth of The Book Thing has been strangled by our current location; no handicap accessibility, no heat, no bathroom, and lack of room limit the time that people can stay to volunteer or shop, and that limits the amount of books we can display and give away.

With the purchase of this building, 3001 Vineyard Lane in Waverly, we will have a permanent location in Baltimore so our existence is no longer at the whim of landlords. Our monthly mortgage payments will be less than we would have to pay in rent for a similar space. This new building will also have luxury items such as bathrooms and heat.

We have secured a mortgage for $210,00 from a private individual, amortized over 30 years but due in three years. Now all we need is the remaining $50,000 of the purchase price and $10,000 for closing costs. I have contacted some foundations and corporations. They have expressed interest, but that will take time. So we are coming to you, our supporters, for help.

To all of those who have given recently, thank you. To all of those who haven’t, please consider giving. If you believe in The Book Thing, ask friends, neighbors, and relatives. Remember, all donations are tax deductible. Check the website (http://www.bookthing.org/) for updates.

Yours in books,
Russell Wattenberg

Please spread the word! If you have a blog, please blog this. If you have an account on Fark, please try to get this submitted. Try other sites or forums you may belong to as well. We’re going to get them money! The internet will help the book thing, goddamn it!

Also make sure you link to the donation site DIRECTLY, not to the donation page on bookthing.org, or else (should there be a deluge of traffic) the book thing site will probably go down. Here’s the donation link. Personally, I’m giving $20. Hopefully, we can do more.

Tidbits

Anyone else think that “Tidbits” is a funny word? No? Just me, then. Oh well. Here are some tidbits from over the weekend.

1) On Friday night, ACWF and I went on a dinner boat cruise thing from Alexandria, VA to Georgetown, DC. It was okay, we got a 5 course dinner* that was about average, and a floating tour of the monuments. We got to see the back of the Lincoln Memorial, and the back of the Jefferson Memorial. All in all, I’d say the entire boat ride was bursting with mediocrity. It’s a good thing we had a $100 gift certificate, or I really would have felt ripped off.

2) Speaking of bursting with mediocrity, The Sketch Show premiered last night. Good grief was it terrible. I only laughed twice during the whole show, and it wasn’t so much a laugh as a chuckle marred with pity. There was actually a point where they used the tired double entendre of teste/testy in a sketch about a guy who lost a testicle. Yawn. Robot Chicken, on the other hand, had me laughing to the point of hernia. Again.

3) On Saturday, ACWF and I went to the mall so she could purchase her signature scent, Happy, by Clinique. (I used to wear Curve, but Kmart wears Curve too, so as opposed to smelling like we cuddle whenever we’re together, I opted for Kenneth Cole, Black. But I accidentally bought New York instead of Black, so now that’s what I smell like during the infrequent times I’m wearing cologne.) We met my uncle and second cousin, his grandson, at Gillians, and we played some games. We eventually found one game, and it had a reputation for paying out big tickets. There was a tech refilling the tickets every five minutes. We soon found out why. Once you start to learn the nuance of the game, it’s easy to get about 200 tickets per play. You simply shoot the ball to the upper level, drop it through the 80 ticket hole while the bonus ticket hole has… nevermind. Let’s just stick with, “it’s easy to get 200 tickets per play.” At one point I managed to hit the 1000 point hole, and tickets started spewing out of the machine. The tech had to come and reload in the middle of the payout, all the while my second cousin keeps calling me, “a legend.”

“Holy crap! Ha ha ha! Look at all these tickets! This guy’s a legend! He’s a legend!”

4) Finally, last night, while we were watching TV there was this horrible smell. Like a horrible baby poop mixed with rotten enchiladas and curry. It smelled horrific. Neither ACWF nor I had the vapors, and there were no cats in the room, so we were baffled. After a moment, the smell went away. A smell strong enough to kill a small child was gone. A little later on, it came back, and apparently it was following ACWF around. She changed out of her pajamas into another pair of pajamas, and the smell went away. Weird.

Have a nice week.

*The five course dinner consisted of a cheese course of that red wine cheese that comes in little plastic buckets, a salad with fresh greens, fruit, walnuts, and mushrooms, a seafood chowder, our entree, shrimp and crabmeat with rice and green beans, and cheesecake for dessert for me. Not exactly fancy.
