Spanglish was fantastic! It does a good job of not neatly fitting into any genre, and it defied my expectations over, and over again. The whole production was anti-formulaic from the music, to the script, to the way the characters were presented.
The basic idea is that the movie is a bildungsroman couched in a romantic comedy that never gets sappy.
It’s almost like, American Beauty Lite. It has all the same elements, but it doens’t take itself so seriously.
I predict it to be the sleeper hit of the season, and encourage you to check it out.

According to Bitter Girl, my drinks sound disgusting. Normally, I’d argue (it’s my nature to disagree) but she’s a bartender, and I defer to her opinion on all things alcohol. Thankfully, she’s as supportive as she is a critic, so she left me this drink recipe in comments. I’m sharing it with you verbatim.
Here’s what I make when I get the indecisive girl who doesn’t want to taste the alcohol in her drink. I give you:
The Sorority Slapper
4 counts vanilla vodka
1/2 count cointreau
1 count chambord
1 count rose’s lime
1/4 count orange juice
Pour all ingredients into iced shaker. Shake well. Strain into chilled martini glass. Garnish with cherry.
Fluffy girls will love it. Tastes like cotton candy. Looks like a cosmo and it makes them less trendy than the stupid appletini drinkers. Goes down like water.
